PublicationsHenry Lee is actively pursuing academic research. He has published in a number of conferences (E&amp;PDE, DRS, DTRS, Memory Full?) and journals (Digital Creativity). Henry has served as a peer-reviewer for a number of conferences. He has also directed conference workshops for AIGA, Georgetown University, and BYU. See the links below to read his published work:Exploring the Experiential Reading Differences Between Visual and Written Research Papers&nbsp;
Abstract: Visual or pictorial research papers have emerged in recent years in academic conferences as a non-written archival contribution. Dual Coding Theory teaches us that visual knowledge is distinct from written knowledge and is arguably a universal language (Dreyfuss, 1984), with the ability to communicate complex ideas with clarity, precision, and efficiency (Tufte, 2001). This study explores the reading experience differences between a visual and written research paper containing identical content from design, engineering, and business disciplines. Reading experiences were assessed using a ‘think, feel, and do’ survey, and comprehension was assessed with a quiz. Participants tracked time spent reading and how many times they revisited information. Visual papers provide an improved overall reading experience. Quiz comprehension results were mixed, showing no advantage of one modality over the other. Participants reading visual papers revisited information twice as much as those reading written papers. Designers, engineers, and businesspeople were favourably united in their visual paper reading experience ratings but were not on their written paper ratings.&nbsp;

Preferable Futures of Design Thinking Education: a Discussion of Existing Programs, Perceptions and Directions (To Be Published at DTRS’15 in 2026)Abstract: The existence of numerous design thinking programs, certificates, and bootcamps indicates a continuing interest in design thinking as a perspective used to enhance innovation, creativity, and problem-solving. This article supplements the discussion surrounding design thinking and its interpretations by analyzing a number of existing design thinking programs currently offered. The analysis consisted of an exploratory assessment, comparing keywords and descriptions as well as looking for patterns and consistencies. The goal was to understand the nature of contemporary design thinking dissemination and perception on a basic level, suggesting its trajectory and function within business, design, and academia. Our findings indicate that design thinking is largely perceived as an explicit business-oriented approach to innovation, as opposed to a tacit designerly way of knowing. In tandem with other design thinking practitioners, educators, and scholars, this article discusses redefining, or even renaming, design thinking in order to reclaim it for designers. Additionally, this article offers up the suggestion that design futures methods and pluriversal perspectives be used to aid designers in the redefining of what design thinking could, and should, be.
Examining Reflexivity: Questioning Values Through Visual-Verbal Design Models (To Be Published at E&amp;PDE 2026)Abstract:

Design models have been a foundational method to properly understand design praxis and theory, while also perpetuating priorities and knowledge for the discipline. These models, both visual and verbal in nature, embody design values and serve as an important medium for collaboration and setting expectations among designers and non-designers. Indeed, designers of all experience levels use these models to understand and enact the design process. This study assesses the visual and verbal characteristics of 38 design process models to better understand the projection of traditional pragmatism versus more reflexive elements in design process dissemination. The findings of this study demonstrate that there is a myopic history of prevailing design models, even amidst the presence of evolving methodological and theoretical exploration within the design discipline. This is indicated through pragmatic language, single-outcome orientations, and narrow perspectives on the design process. Through this study it is revealed that prevailing design models contain verbal patterns and visual cues that focus primarily on pragmatic processes and outcomes and generally omit reflexive and pluralistic practices that could place the designer amidst their work, their users, and the larger development of designed knowledge. Here, researchers suggest creating and testing alternative models that challenge existing model structures and languages in favour of more contemporary paradigms, such as reflexive practice and pluriversal design. This research also prompts further inquiry into model usage in education and practice, including their function, development, and interpretation in the academic space for design students.

Artificial Intelligence as Relational Artifacts in Creative LearningAbstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly advanced in creating professional-level media content. In creative education, determining how students can benefit without becoming dependent on them is a challenge. In this study, researchers conducted an exploratory experiment that positioned AI as a relational artifact to students in a series of drawing activities and examined the potential impact of affective relations with machines in socio-cultural creative learning. The resulting artifacts, observations, and interview transcripts were analyzed using the Consensual Assessment Technique and a grounded theory approach. The study's results indicate that the design professors reliably evaluated the student drawings as more creative than the AI drawings, but neither demonstrated a consistent increase in creativity. However, the presence of AI engaged the students to explore different approaches to artistic prompts. We theorize that AI can be mediated as a learning artifact for transformative creativity if the students perceive their relationship with AI as empathetic and collaborative.
Applying the Carrier-bag Framework of Design to Symbolic Violence and Design Histories
Abstract:&nbsp;The need to rewrite and reimagine design history from alternate perspectives is only increasing as design itself becomes widespread. It is particularly necessary to address the symbolic violence of design. For this, inspiration is taken from Ursula K. Le Guin’s 1986 essay, “The Carrier-bag Theory of Fiction,” which re-envisioned our popular understanding of prehistory by denouncing a focus on the violent tools that mankind used to gain an evolutionary edge: the stone, stick and bone. Instead, she directs our attention to the often overlooked and mundane ancient tools: the bag, sling, pouch, and anything used to carry. In sum, any kind of ‘carrier-bag.’ How might we reimagine design history through the lens of a carrier-bag? The Carrier-bag Framework of Design might create the opportunity to critique past and current design systems and provides a mental framework in which designers can effectively address design’s support of symbolic violence, such as extractive industries, private property, and the global supply chain. We refer to histories from other fields and knowledge systems as alternatives to current design history cannon, drawing attention away from colonial design histories as the singular history. A Carrier-bag Framework of Design underscores the ethical implications of design systems throughout history by challenging what designs and designers receive attention, what systems support successful design, and essentially suggests that design need not exist in a colonial framework. Simply discussing an alternative theory of design prompts further design critique and open discourse.
Academically Informed AI vs. Human-designed Packaging: A Comparative Evaluation
Abstract:&nbsp;As advancements in language model-powered text-to-image AI platforms accelerate, individuals can increasingly generate high-fidelity visual content more efficiently, regardless of background. These platforms are powerful tools for rapidly iterating and visualizing packaging design concepts. This study assesses whether AI-generated milk package designs, steered by academic packaging research, will produce packaging outcomes that perform equal to or better than human-designed outcomes with minimal designer input. For this study, researchers curated, summarized, and combined leading academic articles on packaging design into textual AI-prompts. The textual prompts were input into the platform RunDiffusion to generate visual milk packaging designs. The images created by the platform were reviewed by 48 human participants and compared to existing, human-made milk packaging designs to determine which designs perform better according to metrics used in a previously published study at E&amp;PDE ‘23. The survey results indicate that the human designs slightly outperformed the AI designs in purchase likelihood and most other categories when including all survey participants. However, when non-milk users (those who rarely or never drink milk) were excluded from the results, the AI designs slightly outperformed the human designs regarding purchase likelihood. This outcome suggests that AI platforms can efficiently produce packaging design outcomes that can compete with human designs. Further, it is important that design educators understand the implications of these results, suggesting that AI platforms will increasingly be used in design workflows and academic training.

Gravel Travel (Design Research + Industrial Design)Gravel Travel is startup that focuses on travel experiences and products. As a design lead I developed their design (research) processes and launched two projects—a blanket and a backpack system—for a total of four products that raised over 1 million dollars in crowdfunding alone, has sold regularly for years, and awarded a patent.
I also directed 4 designers throughout the design process, including junior designers and interns.

Design Research
Because I was the first industrial designer to work at Gravel Travel they asked me to build out their design processes. I began by differentiating between primary research and secondary research methods. I made it clear that PRIMARY RESEARCH was vital to the success of our products. This meant doing secondary research on the side, while focusing on meeting our current and future users where they were.

I built out various worksheets, which often built on one another, in order to organize and glean insights from the primary research.<img width="2550" height="3300" width_o="2550" height_o="3300" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2e2371e272f961b68b6af616130095576e4e70f4fc8e3cd5c3e234576040fa82/Gravel-Travel-Imagery-01.png" data-mid="170059032" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2e2371e272f961b68b6af616130095576e4e70f4fc8e3cd5c3e234576040fa82/Gravel-Travel-Imagery-01.png" /><img width="3543" height="2016" width_o="3543" height_o="2016" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0ba86c0839d729b847b6280b5bff25064a13c279d7119c4592cd344ac3f76bb8/Gravel-Travel-Imagery-02.png" data-mid="170059120" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0ba86c0839d729b847b6280b5bff25064a13c279d7119c4592cd344ac3f76bb8/Gravel-Travel-Imagery-02.png" /><img width="3542" height="2016" width_o="3542" height_o="2016" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/27d58349df682f07554236b2173219752f768e3b02327d42c64fb26a4d292e65/Gravel-Travel-Imagery-03.png" data-mid="170059126" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/27d58349df682f07554236b2173219752f768e3b02327d42c64fb26a4d292e65/Gravel-Travel-Imagery-03.png" /><img width="3543" height="2016" width_o="3543" height_o="2016" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/39a6251ea02000ba4742a3934d64f61a7f7ca1296113d9f189b73871de8b1e5b/Gravel-Travel-Imagery-04.png" data-mid="170059135" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/39a6251ea02000ba4742a3934d64f61a7f7ca1296113d9f189b73871de8b1e5b/Gravel-Travel-Imagery-04.png" />I conducted 30+ interviews, held 5 workshops, and received 600+ survey results. I arrived at two main insights: travelers preferred hands-free experiences, and there was a lack of comfort while traveling overall.Industrial DesignBased on the research conducted we decided to design a travel blanket that brought comfort and warmth (and was easy to stash away) and a travel backpack system that focused on a hands-free travel experience.
Throughout the process I developed sketches, tech packs, sewed samples, and worked with manufacturers abroad to bring these projects to life.
We iterated on dozens of concepts for the solutions we needed to accomplish between the blanket and the backpack:

Here are some of the concepts below:

Much of the design was in the details. I sketched hundreds of pages of details, such as the one below:<img width="2048" height="857" width_o="2048" height_o="857" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/26ab487ae3671c488f38306cbb9a6dbb7cef03d90e5174aef2ee3b7e61973b6e/IMG_0131.jpg" data-mid="185225883" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/26ab487ae3671c488f38306cbb9a6dbb7cef03d90e5174aef2ee3b7e61973b6e/IMG_0131.jpg" />
Here are images of the four completed products, including the travel blanket and the three travel bags:

This project required me to understand soft goods, hard goods, manufacturing, design team management, and a range of other useful design skills. The range of products released found success on kickstarter and the Gravel Travel online store. We also proposed a travel water bottle that was able to fit into slim luggage, but did not go into production.

Wiley Wi-Fi Home Phone (Industrial Design + Design Research)Wiley is a Wi-Fi enable home phone for families. As the senior designer on the project I took the concept from napkin sketch to a successfully funded Kickstarter. You can pre-order the phone (and see the e-commerce website I helped develop) here.
The project required me to research, sketch, 3D model, prototype, and eventually prepare the design for manufacture for the ship date in 2026.

Zenith Air Pollution System (Design Research + UI/UX Design + Industrial Design)For a personal project I decided to study air pollution in Utah Valley, its effects, and possible ways to raise awareness of the issues arising from it. I developed an app, an air pollution sign with a sensor in it, and an animation on being aware of Utah Air.

Above is the animation I created to raise awareness of the dangers of Utah Air. Below is the Zenith App, used to determine pollution levels, in action.

Below is an animation of the air pollution sensor sign that I designed, which displays the air pollution in the local area. Images down further show the sign actually made.

Design Research

For this project I started with research on the topic. I relied heavily on secondary research, turning to articles, studies, surveys, and projects already completed on the issue of air polluton and air pollution in Utah Valley. I kept a large visual board of my research links and notes on the specific articles, as well as patterns and connections.
<img width="2124" height="1916" width_o="2124" height_o="1916" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/37bd06d6ebbe7293454983acdaed5135efc6b449dbb2649363a0e9fcc34e409e/Screen-Shot-2023-02-28-at-6.11.37-PM.png" data-mid="170097307" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/37bd06d6ebbe7293454983acdaed5135efc6b449dbb2649363a0e9fcc34e409e/Screen-Shot-2023-02-28-at-6.11.37-PM.png" />
UI/UX Design
Based on the research I conducted I decided to develop an app that would alert the user of pollution levels in the area, send challenges to reduce personal pollution, and help understand which groups were at risk that day.

Industrial Design
I also decided to design a road sign that connected to the app, and displayed a readout of the pollution in that area using an air pollution sensor. I began ideating using hand-sketches early on:<img width="2332" height="1676" width_o="2332" height_o="1676" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f463f6be561c7d2f3f23bd4fc61b50d537eaecec5de965467ef0c1c079992a87/Screen-Shot-2023-02-28-at-6.08.54-PM.png" data-mid="170102270" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f463f6be561c7d2f3f23bd4fc61b50d537eaecec5de965467ef0c1c079992a87/Screen-Shot-2023-02-28-at-6.08.54-PM.png" />

Design Research Methods (Design Research + Graphic Design)While conducting design research methods and lecturing at Parsons School of Design I developed a number of concepts and subsequent graphics. The graphics are primarily meant for students and early career designs to help them understand research method flows.&nbsp;
Although these methods were self-developed and new, I also provide lectures on universal design methods, such as interviews, observations, prototyping, wireframing, modeling, sketching, and so on.
Rapid Research Cycle Concept
<img width="2551" height="2270" width_o="2551" height_o="2270" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9802506d9fff81bbce490b61511830ba3c815326dfae985c7c9b9e1506bcf869/Rapid-Research-Spiral.png" data-mid="170179158" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9802506d9fff81bbce490b61511830ba3c815326dfae985c7c9b9e1506bcf869/Rapid-Research-Spiral.png" />The first of these methods is a rapid research spiral. This spiral is taught primarily in the research phase of fourth-year students in their capstone course. The concept is to help them understand that research methods themselves should be analyzed and shifted according to their efficacy and the insights provided. The journey is to narrow down from a general topic and set of questions to a more specific topic and set of questions while conducting design research.
Cyclical Double Diamond Concept
<img width="2104" height="2132" width_o="2104" height_o="2132" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/690afbc7a993e6ff180f637caced344e86827e31d27e511f017039c6735e6d56/Cyclical-Double-Diamond.png" data-mid="170179474" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/690afbc7a993e6ff180f637caced344e86827e31d27e511f017039c6735e6d56/Cyclical-Double-Diamond.png" />
The second of these methods is similar to the first in its cyclical nature. It is a double diamond that has been made infinite. I teach designers and clients that the process of researching and implementing is ideally endless. This differs from the traditional double diamond which is linear and only contains two major phases.&nbsp;
Research Triangulation Concepts 1 &amp; 2
<img width="3408" height="2835" width_o="3408" height_o="2835" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/cbd7dbfeeea305b895838cce58001cf3ac181aeb7080c5011978e9be06fbc6d1/Research-Triangulation-Graphic-01.png" data-mid="170180504" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/cbd7dbfeeea305b895838cce58001cf3ac181aeb7080c5011978e9be06fbc6d1/Research-Triangulation-Graphic-01.png" />
The next concept is my own take on the research triangulation strategy. Typically research triangulation requires a designer to choose three methods and then find insights. I take it a step further and ask the designer to decide on a synthesis and analysis method beforehand that will work. See the image below:
<img width="2540" height="1438" width_o="2540" height_o="1438" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e19b1a581cce8e8cce17681d14509de0c4bd53bddabe5e91e11809f572c5ca4f/Research-Triangulation-Graphic-02.png" data-mid="170186132" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e19b1a581cce8e8cce17681d14509de0c4bd53bddabe5e91e11809f572c5ca4f/Research-Triangulation-Graphic-02.png" />
I also encourage making as a research strategy, so the same triangle can be applied by replacing a synthesis and analysis method with a making and prototyping method to test out the insights gained:
<img width="3409" height="2835" width_o="3409" height_o="2835" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/701e6cf2a352d6f882c9b0085d857ac77365b70b7165ce656dd54839ef260b31/Research-Triangulation-Graphic-03.png" data-mid="170186220" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/701e6cf2a352d6f882c9b0085d857ac77365b70b7165ce656dd54839ef260b31/Research-Triangulation-Graphic-03.png" />
For example, making and displaying speculative design artifact can be a great way to test out insights or ask new questions:<img width="2540" height="1438" width_o="2540" height_o="1438" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0320241679f0c1a3e0badf6893f3f874860045424388731426a972040d80146a/Research-Triangulation-Graphic-04.png" data-mid="170186228" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0320241679f0c1a3e0badf6893f3f874860045424388731426a972040d80146a/Research-Triangulation-Graphic-04.png" />

In conclusion, these research methods and graphics are just a few that I have developed to help in working with clients to understand the design process, but primarily to help students and early career designers to understand their own design process.

The Academy MFA Thesis (Design Research + Speculative Design)For my MFA thesis at Parsons School of Design (The New School) I decided to study academic publishing and use speculative design making methods to imagine an alternative to academic publishing. My project is addressing specifically the publishing process, and the inaccessibility of published articles. In the end I designed eight speculative artifacts.
<img width="3300" height="3301" width_o="3300" height_o="3301" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a1714311635046ae52bada9312af6d46288357a1b6d9550168126d490160ba47/Consumables-Exports-04.png" data-mid="170190482" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a1714311635046ae52bada9312af6d46288357a1b6d9550168126d490160ba47/Consumables-Exports-04.png" />

I asked specifically how we might play around with the distribution of articles that had already been published, which contained relevant information for a wider audience.
<img width="2024" height="1070" width_o="2024" height_o="1070" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/811a9386c34e38fa9dacb0bc6712b93363d78d21014c3ea149ff71db57414f0c/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.35.58-AM.png" data-mid="170190289" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/811a9386c34e38fa9dacb0bc6712b93363d78d21014c3ea149ff71db57414f0c/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.35.58-AM.png" />
I began with secondary research but quickly moved on to making and prototyping as a form of research. I designed clothing labels as a method to distribute academic articles:
<img width="2138" height="1408" width_o="2138" height_o="1408" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f86846ceb2a1a3b5c909a3d8e862e9f7234271bbd538b48a6dba39699dd11a99/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.39.22-AM.png" data-mid="170190934" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f86846ceb2a1a3b5c909a3d8e862e9f7234271bbd538b48a6dba39699dd11a99/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.39.22-AM.png" /><img width="2138" height="1408" width_o="2138" height_o="1408" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0a15189b2d35c873cedb6e3065638e85c3e2a687caeff5aae01fdc3b3c3e2a84/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.40.11-AM.png" data-mid="170190995" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0a15189b2d35c873cedb6e3065638e85c3e2a687caeff5aae01fdc3b3c3e2a84/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.40.11-AM.png" />
After playing around with some other prototypes I eventually developed a method to the academic artifact madness:
<img width="2712" height="750" width_o="2712" height_o="750" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b7a5ccce8eaebb4fbd5e5c4d08705d7b5c9d4cf61c9472ed90ebc7236907d0aa/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.41.54-AM.png" data-mid="170191166" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b7a5ccce8eaebb4fbd5e5c4d08705d7b5c9d4cf61c9472ed90ebc7236907d0aa/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.41.54-AM.png" />One of the first articles I put through the system was titled The global environmental
injustice of fast fashion, and it was chosen because it discusses the negative effects
of fast fashion in a concise overview. The article itself serves as a starter for anyone
interested in the effects of fast fashion. Although this one specific article was chosen
for this shirt, it is possible to “print” other articles, using the clothing model as a way to
disseminate important information. On top of this, the shirt plays around with the idea
of the usefulness of knowledge; how can we make knowledge more (literally) useful?
Clothing is a human need, and using that empty space on clothing only improves the
article of clothing, adding another dimension to its use.

	<img width="2882" height="3905" width_o="2882" height_o="3905" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bb355a020398db6b66f6ba7223627e28a2d8135d5eac2cdc60c260d8dd18fee9/IMG_6774.jpg" data-mid="170191328" border="0" data-scale="98" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/bb355a020398db6b66f6ba7223627e28a2d8135d5eac2cdc60c260d8dd18fee9/IMG_6774.jpg" />
	<img width="3024" height="4032" width_o="3024" height_o="4032" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a7a9d07d97906804e99b9cad2bac5191424cb897d6bf36d56962e82b67120232/IMG_6775.jpg" data-mid="170191344" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a7a9d07d97906804e99b9cad2bac5191424cb897d6bf36d56962e82b67120232/IMG_6775.jpg" />

Here is the tag I created for the t-shirt, which is sewn into the inner side of the shirt.
The multi-page tag contains the abstract of the article, and can quickly be referenced
during a conversation. Small details like this add to the artifacts’ usefulness and
legitimacy.

Here is an example of how I used this system to develop the shirt and tag:
<img width="2790" height="1052" width_o="2790" height_o="1052" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e837dee82e5a8599022dee7285d3f3c7727c9a21cd2333e2ce85a0b0e88a5f19/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.46.00-AM.png" data-mid="170191441" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e837dee82e5a8599022dee7285d3f3c7727c9a21cd2333e2ce85a0b0e88a5f19/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.46.00-AM.png" />
This next artifact is a speculative trio of academic chocolate bars, presented as a
volume of an academic journal. Taking the idea of “bite-size information,” and creating
a reading companion for long days in the office or library, this artifact helps consume
information. The outside facing side of the wrapper highlights the abstract of the
article printed on the inner wrapping. Details, such as the title, author, and kind of
chocolate are also displayed on the front. The academic chocolate bar could have
multiple issues a year, with each issue being a different article.
<img width="2098" height="1358" width_o="2098" height_o="1358" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c420ec17a41efd788051808da20f77b33368c0608ea442c8115152415423f686/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.47.42-AM.png" data-mid="170192235" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c420ec17a41efd788051808da20f77b33368c0608ea442c8115152415423f686/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.47.42-AM.png" />

different cans. The purpose of this artifact was to create a setting in which articles
could be discussed in a relaxed manner… and which might appeal to a larger
audience who simply likes to drink beer.
<img width="1618" height="1092" width_o="1618" height_o="1092" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a69c6fa9561a2f11c4ef88dd44904e87a961c670e17599e75c9120a50b552f96/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.48.55-AM.png" data-mid="170192485" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a69c6fa9561a2f11c4ef88dd44904e87a961c670e17599e75c9120a50b552f96/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.48.55-AM.png" />
There was also the coca-cola bottle that demonstrates the opportunity for academics to pair with companies and print articles on their products:

<img width="2744" height="1258" width_o="2744" height_o="1258" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6acc7bc9fee94055de34dd1cdafc6a065d82fea2281aa40250aaf323e065afd1/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.49.36-AM.png" data-mid="170192508" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/6acc7bc9fee94055de34dd1cdafc6a065d82fea2281aa40250aaf323e065afd1/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.49.36-AM.png" />

Here we have an artifact that serves as an example of collaboration and
co-design. I put out a simple call for papers to the current TD students, and began
working with some of them. This artifact came from the undergraduate dissertation
work of one of the TD students. First, I’d like to thank this student for taking the time to
provide and discuss their article, and for working together through a few long
meetings. I read through the dissertation a number of times… During the meetings we
discussed the dissertation itself, and reimagined aspects of it. After discussing the
importance of the dissertation, the author wanted to highlight two aspects. 1. To
communicate the existence and importance of Multi-layered Plastics, which aren’t
recyclable and 2. A desire to support craftsmanship that moves away from
multi-layered plastic use. Using these two aspects as a goal, we put the article
through the system I’ve described above.
The final designed output was a roll of paper packaging tape that included an
infographic from the article. The infographic is informative, educating readers on what
kinds of plastics exists, and providing examples of each of those kinds of plastics.
Because the article discusses the unrecyclable nature of different plastics, and
packing tape is often made of plastics, we decided to print this infographic on
water-activated paper tape, in order to support the alternative craftmsanhsip goals
mentioned in the article. Overall, the tape itself is a form of information distribution
that seeks to educate consumers on plastics:
<img width="2124" height="1426" width_o="2124" height_o="1426" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4f620026e1c4d8d3ad92ed0ad9f06ba37b7b2c088b60aead9eb3daa2c6abe6ce/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.51.55-AM.png" data-mid="170192679" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4f620026e1c4d8d3ad92ed0ad9f06ba37b7b2c088b60aead9eb3daa2c6abe6ce/Screen-Shot-2023-03-01-at-10.51.55-AM.png" />
There were more bizarre artifacts, such as a vinyl, meat packagind stickers, and public facing printouts:

There are a number of other artifacts that are still being worked on. There isn’t enough space to show them or explain them all here. In conclusion, the project was a great exercise in design research through speculative design. Throughout the process I learned about academic publishing and the ins and outs.&nbsp;

MemoryFull? Conference Paper (Design Research + Writing)An article I wrote was accepted into the MemoryFull? Conference being held by the Design History Society. I presented with the title “Applying the Carrier-bag Framework of Design to Symbolic
Violence and Design Histories.” The article was reviewed and revised by Bryan Howell, an industrial design faculty member, and presented at the conference.
The paper required me to be familiar with design history itself through the research of products themselves, articles, studies, case studies, and more.

LearnxDesign Research Paper (Design Research + Writing)An article I worked on and published in the LearnxDesign 2021 (Design Research Society) conference was awarded the top research paper. The article centered on the differences between visual and written research papers, under the title, “Exploring the Experiential Reading Differences between Visual and Written Research Papers.” You can find the article here.

My primary focus of the writing was secondary research and the history of academic publishing.
