Walnut Ice Cream Scoop (Industrial Design)


For a personal project to improve my general design skills I focused on rapid prototyping, quick sketching, form creation, 3D modeling, 3D printing, and CNC milling. Because I felt that ice cream scoops often lack beauty I designed an ice cream scoop focused on both beauty and utility. I began with sketching forms:



After going through a few rounds of sketching I then moved into sculpting by hand using foam. The goal was to find something that fit in the hand well and then translated into a scoop:



3D odeling and 3D printing:

After sculpting twenty or so forms I decided to move into the digital. I used Solidworks to draft numerous 3D designs, translating the sculpted designs into CAD versions. After such I 3D printed a number of these in order to both practice 3D printing but also to size and use the scoop:





Finally, I used a CNC mill to mill the final piece. I decided to use a block of walnut because it is sturdy and elegant. Here is the finalized product:
